Full Guide Here

Hola chic@s,

I hope you’ve had a good ‘finde’ (‘finde’ being shorthand for ‘fin de semana').

Let’s get to it 👇

Por vs Para.

Two little words that confuse all Spanish learners (myself included).

It’s bloody exhausting constantly second-guessing yourself.

Especially when there are so many rules to learn.

So we’re going to keep things really simple.

Before memorising the por vs para rules, I want you to always remember one thing.

Intention.

Para is your forward-facing word:
It points somewhere and has a clear end-point.

Por is your backward-facing word:
It’s for everything that happens because of, through, or along the way.

So before deciding which one to use, always ask yourself:

Is this forward-facing or backward-facing?”

e.g This present is for my sister

Is this forward-facing or backward-facing?

It’s forward-facing.

It has a clear end-point.

So we’d use para.

e.j Este regalo es para mi hermana

e.g We studied for four hours

Is this forward-facing or backward-facing?

It’s backward-facing.

It’s already happened.

So we’d use por.

e.j Estudiamos por cuatro horas

Useful right?

So don’t stress about learning all of the rules and trying to remember them verbatim.

That will only contribute to the blockages you experience when speaking.

And remember, we want to get you out there speaking and living.

Not just learning.

So if you keep this question in mind it will help you stop second-guessing yourself when deciding whether to use por or para.

For more examples, read through the short guide attached at the top of this letter.

Also send it to someone who is done second-guessing themselves in Spanish.

Hope that helps.

Any questions, let me know.

Un abrazo,

Harrison
