Let’s look at a very special verb in Spanish.

So special, there’s no one-word equivalent in English.

You buy a new pair of shoes.

The next morning, you put them on for the first time.

What are you doing?

In English, we need an entire sentence to explain this.

But in Spanish, we need one word.

Estrenar.

Whenever you see this verb, I want you to think:

‘First time’.


1) To wear, use or try something for the first time

e.j Ayer María estrenó la falda.
Yesterday María wore the skirt for the first time.

(Note - we don’t need to use ‘por primera vez’ here. The verb estrenar already covers that meaning).

e.j Mañana voy a estrenar mi nuevo teléfono.
Tomorrow I’m going to use my new phone for the first time.



2) To premiere/release a play, movie, tv show or song

e.j Hoy el cine estrena Star Wars.
Today the cinema premieres Star Wars.

e.j La banda de Marco va a estrenar una nueva canción.
Marco’s band is going to release a new song.

El estreno = the premiere of a movie


What a delightful little verb that is.

Estrenar.
