The Mexican accent is one of the clearest and easiest to understand in the Spanish-speaking world 🇲🇽

But don’t let that fool you…

Mexicans use a tonne of slang in daily conversation 😂

They also love:

  • diminutives

  • playful exaggeration

  • and speaking politely

You’ll hear:

usted

used all the time, even among younger people and friends.

Mexican slang is often referred to as:

modismos mexicanos

And then there’s:

albures 😭

Mexican sexual double entendres.

We’ll get to those later…

Thank you to my colleague Sandra 🇲🇽 for teaching me these 👇

Güey / Wey = dude / mate / idiot

This is everywhere in Mexico.

It’s basically the Mexican version of:

tío / tía

in Spain 🇪🇸

It’s gender neutral and the meaning changes depending on:

  • tone

  • context

  • relationship

Also:

It’s pronounced:

“wey”

even if people spell it:

  • güey

  • wey

e.j Oye, güey, ven acá
Hey dude, come here

e.j ¡Eres un güey inútil!
You’re such an idiot!

¡Qué onda! = what’s up? / how’s it going?

Probably the most common greeting in Mexico.

e.j ¡Qué onda, wey!
What’s up dude!

¡No manches! = no way! / you’re kidding!

Very common reaction phrase.

Like:

  • no way

  • seriously?

  • you’re joking

e.j ¡No manches, hace muchísimo calor!
No way, it’s ridiculously hot!

¡No mames! = WTF! / no f***ing way!

The stronger, more vulgar version 😂

e.j ¡No mames, está carísimo!
WTF, that’s insanely expensive!

Chido / Chida = cool / awesome

Classic Mexican slang.

e.j Está bien chido tu coche
Your car is awesome

Padre / Padrísimo = cool / awesome

Another way of saying:

cool

e.j ¡Qué padre!
How cool!

e.j La fiesta estuvo padrísima
The party was amazing

Órale = wow! / okay! / let’s go!

One of the most iconic Mexican words 😂

Can mean:

  • wow

  • come on

  • alright

  • let’s do it

depending on context.

e.j ¡Órale, qué buena idea!
Wow, what a good idea!

Ándale = come on! / hurry up! / that’s right!

Very expressive.

e.j ¡Ándale, muévete!
Come on, move it!

Sale = okay / deal

Super common response.

e.j ¿Nos vemos mañana? — Sale
See you tomorrow? — Deal

Va / Va que va = sure / sounds good

Another agreement phrase.

e.j ¿Vamos al cine? — Va
Shall we go to the cinema? — Sure

Chamba = job / work

Very common in Mexico and Central America.

e.j Estoy buscando chamba
I’m looking for work

Lana = money / cash

Literally:

wool 🧶

But colloquially:

money

e.j No tengo lana
I don’t have money

Chela = beer

One of the first words worth learning 😎

e.j Una chela bien fría, porfa
A cold beer please

La neta = the truth / honestly / really

Very useful phrase.

e.j ¿Neta? No lo sabía
Really? I didn’t know that

Fresa = preppy / snobby person

Someone seen as:

  • posh

  • privileged

  • trendy

e.j Ella es bien fresa
She’s really posh

Naco / Naca = tacky / vulgar

The opposite of:

fresa

e.j Qué naco se ve eso
That looks tacky

Bronca = problem / trouble

Very common everyday word.

e.j Tengo una bronca en el trabajo
I’ve got a problem at work

Chale = bummer! / no way!

Used for disappointment.

e.j ¿Se canceló? ¡Chale!
It got cancelled? Damn!

Gacho = mean / bad / ugly

e.j Qué gacho lo que hiciste
That was mean of you

Mande = pardon? / sorry?

Very polite way to ask someone to repeat themselves.

e.j ¿Qué dijiste? — Mande
What did you say? — Sorry?

Pedo = problem / mess / drunk / situation

Literal translation:

fart 💨

But Mexicans use this word for absolutely everything 😂

e.j No hay pedo
No problem

e.j Está bien pedo
He’s really drunk

🇲🇽 Albures: Mexico’s Double Meanings 😭

Now…

Let’s briefly talk about:

albures

Mexican sexual double entendres.

These are extremely common, especially in:

Mexico City 🇲🇽

Albures take innocent phrases and twist them into something sexual 😂

For example:

¿Te gusta el chile?

Can mean:

  • Do you like chili peppers? 🌶️

  • …or something else 👀

Mexicans absolutely love this kind of wordplay.

And if you don’t catch the hidden meaning…

you’ve basically lost the conversation 😭

🇲🇽 Final Thought

Learning a few:

modismos mexicanos

helps you instantly sound:

  • more natural

  • more relaxed

  • less textbook

So next time someone says:

¿Qué onda, güey?

you know exactly what’s going on 😎
