The Honduran accent is smooth, friendly and pretty easy on the ears 🇭🇳

Hondurans often refer to themselves as:

catrachos

So if you ever hear:

español catracho

that simply means:

Honduran Spanish

Like much of Central America, Hondurans commonly use:

vos

instead of:

And overall the tone tends to feel:

  • warm

  • relaxed

  • polite

I learned a lot of these expressions from my Honduran friend Daniel 🇭🇳👇

Catracho / Catracha = someone from Honduras

A proud national nickname.

Hondurans use this all the time to refer to themselves.

Chambear = to work

La chamba = work

Very common across Central America.

e.j Tengo que chambear hoy
I have to work today

Maje = dude / guy / idiot

Probably the most Honduran slang word there is 😂

The meaning depends heavily on:

  • tone

  • context

  • relationship

It can be:

  • affectionate

  • insulting

  • playful

e.j Ese maje es buena onda
That guy’s cool

e.j ¡Qué maje más tonto!
What a stupid dude!

Pijinear = to go out partying

Classic nightlife slang 😎

e.j Vamos a pijinear esta noche
We’re going partying tonight

¿Qué pedos? = what’s up?

One of the most common Honduran greetings.

The literal translation is:

“what farts?” 😭

which is objectively hilarious.

Over text, people often shorten it to:

qp2

e.j ¿Qué pedos maje?
What’s up mate?

Alero / Alera = close friend / buddy

Friendly word for someone close to you.

e.j Vamos al cine con mi alera
I’m going to the cinema with my friend

Chele / Chela = light-skinned / fair-haired person

A very common descriptive nickname.

My friend Daniel calls me:

chele 😛

e.j Ese chele es de Londres
That light-skinned guy is from London

Pisto = money

Used all over Central America.

e.j No tengo pisto
I don’t have money

Macizo = cool / awesome

Strong compliment.

e.j ¡Qué macizo tu carro!
Your car is awesome!

🇭🇳 Final Thought

Learning a few words of

jerga catracha

helps you instantly sound more natural with locals.

So remember:

  • use vos

  • call your mates maje

  • and ask:

¿Qué pedos? 😎
