It’s good to be back out in the field, speaking Spanish with the madrileños.
I still got a little nervous ordering my coffee.
This is where a lot of learners freeze 👇
“¿Para tomar o para llevar?”
Para = For
Tomar = To Have In
Llevar = To Take Away
Get past this first question and your nervous system settles.
So simply reply:
“Para tomar” = To Have In
“Para llevar” = To Take Away
Then the next thing is telling them what coffee you want…

Another thing I noticed from this experience is that the waitress began replying to me in English.
If they switch to English, it’s not a verdict on your Spanish.
It’s often an opportunity for them to practice their language skills.
So don’t take it personally and keep speaking Spanish.
